Introduction RESUMate does not directly support remote access, although there are options available to run the program simultaneously from two or more locations. Primarily, there are two different choices, either of which should be selected depending on your specific needs. Limited Remote Access Needs For limited remote access, either only occasional need or a very small number of users, many customers choose to use a remote access service or program, like GoToMyPC. This method requires that a local area network exist at some physical location with enough workstations to host any simultaneous remote users. For example, if there are two people in different locations who want to share a single database, one of those two people would need to have a two machine network installed at their location. One machine would be for their personal use, the other machine would be remotely controlled by the other person. The remote user, of course, would need a computer at their physical location as well, which would be used to control one of the machines on the actual network. The benefits of this approach include the relatively low cost, easy installation, and on-going maintenance of the software or service. Conversely, it does require "extra" computers to be purchased and installed on the true network. For more than a few remote users, this can significantly increase the initial setup cost. In terms of performance, most modern remote-access services or programs are not bad. Primarily, the speed of the internet connections at the hosting location as well as the remote location will play a large role in determining the overall performance. Of course, the hosting machines themselves will be running RESUMate, so the standard hardware requirements apply for them. See the following knowledge base article describing hardware requirements for client machines: http://www.resumate.com/tn_hw_req.asp Larger Scale Remote Access Needs For a larger-scale remote access installation, a Windows Terminal Server, with or without Citrix Metaframe, is recommended. This solution can cost more initially, including licensing costs for the server software as well as increased hardware costs for a more robust server machine. The results, however, are typically more positive than those with remote access services or programs, especially with multiple remote users. Maintaining and managing a Terminal Server also requires a trained network administrator. You are encouraged to contact a qualified networking consultant in your area if you would like a cost estimate for this type of solution. |
